Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is a group of disease syndromes that attack the delicate fibers that secure your teeth in bone and attach your gum tissue to your teeth. Bacteria in the form of plaque invades the area between the tooth and the gum and destroys these fibers as well as the surrounding bone (causing a periodontal pocket). Gradually and without pain until the later stages of the disease, all of the support for the teeth is destroyed and teeth are lost.

*Untreated periodontal disease has recently been linked to coronary artery diseaase, Alzhiemer's Disease, pulmonary diseases, low birthweight babies and to an extremely high degree - Pancreatic cancer.*

Periodontal Treatment

The first treatment step is to delicately remove the plaque and calculus (hardened plaque that adheres to the tooth) in a procedure called scaling and root planing. The body will then repair the damage to some extent.

Periodontal Surgery

The goal of surgery is to reduce the depth of periodontal pockets and either repair or regenerate supporting bone.We have many techniques that are effective and predictable in regenerating lost or damaged supporting bone. Using the laser minimizes and often completely eliminates the need for injections of local anesthesia, bleeding during or after the procedure, cold sensitivity and the cosmetic compromise of 'longer teeth' that accompanies scalpel surgery. Post-operative pain is reported by our patients to be reduced by 90% or more.

Supportive Therapy

All periodontal patients are seen at three-month intervals for periodontal maintenance with our hygienist. Linda has more than twenty years of experience dealing with patients who have been treated with periodontal therapy and together with Dr. Addiego, ensures that stability and health are maintained.
